Do you like to read?

I love to read.

In fact, it was my love of reading that really opened up my life to possibilities that I am not sure I would have learned of otherwise. In books, as a child and teenager, I read about other parts of the world and dreamt about seeing them.

However, it was investing that made that dream a reality.

In the 80s, mutual funds and investing became more mainstream (i.e., not just for the wealthy). My mother, always curious to learn, joined an investing group in our small Midwestern town, and soon, we were cashing in all the low-interest bonds that our grandparents had given us for every birthday and holiday and investing them in a mutual fund.

Fast forward to university.

I was at the University of Illinois studying Finance. I found out that my university offered many study abroad programs, including in Spain, which was one place I had always dreamed of going to.

It was my chance to realize my dream, something that had always felt so right, so meant to be, at least so meant to be, minus that little reality called money that was required.

However, thanks to the money my mom had invested on my behalf, reinvested dividends, price appreciation, and the magic of compound growth did what bonds would not have done for me: It funded my dream. I went to Spain, and the little stockpile of money didn’t help fund just one semester but two.

That experience was life-changing in many ways and has given me so many amazing experiences and opportunities, personally and professionally. (In fact, I met my Swedish husband in Germany, an indirect result of my studying abroad.)

Not everyone has had the benefit of a curious mom (or grandparents who gifted money that could be invested). Not everyone has had the chance to learn more about investing, which I’ve been able to do through my finance studies and continuing education and work.

But almost anyone can invest.

So, now, let me ask you this:

Do you invest?

Do you use investing to achieve your financial and life goals?

If you do, kudos. Investing is important for anyone who is serious about moving beyond just managing their money from month to month to doing what can help them build wealth over time and achieve the financial goals that support their life goals.

And fortunately, as I said, investing is accessible to almost everyone.

Of course, not everyone knows how to start because not everyone has had the benefit of learning in school how to invest, and it may not be knowledge that our parents have or choose to pass down to us. (Or it may not be something that interested us or that we even knew to be interested in or why.)

So, today’s video is about that very topic: Why and How to Get Started Investing
